Prior to the 2006 model year, Mazda6 vehicles manufactured in Michigan (at a plant jointly owned by Ford and operated by Ford) were reportedly filled with Dex-Cool (Motorcraft Specialty Orange Engine Coolant). Mazda evidently distributes some Motorcraft coolants as well. I don't think it is easy to distinguish FL22 and Mazda Long Life Coolant on the basis of appearance that is why Mazda mandates that dealers mark radiator caps with FL22 stickers when they change the coolant to FL22. My 2003 Mazda MPV came with green Long Life (non FL22) Coolant. Zerex Asian Vehicle Coolant is another option.īoth FL22 and Mazda Genuine Long Life Coolant (made by CCI) are green. It now looks like Ford Specialty Green Coolant may be the cost-effective alternative to Mazda FL22. In 2009, Ford finally recognized the superiority of P-OAT coolants for Ford vehicles with Japanese engineered engines and introduced Motorcraft Specialty Green Coolant (reportedly identical to Mazda FL22) as factory fill in the Ford Edge, Flex, Fusion, Taurus, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln MKS, MKT and MKX vehicles. In 2006, Ford started equipping Mazda6 vehicles manufactured in North America with FL22, just like Mazdas manufactured in Japan. FL22 is very similar to extended life coolants used in other Japanese vehicles. Meanwhile, Mazdas manufactured in Japan were equipped with Mazda-branded P-OAT coolants developed by CCI, Mazda Long Life Coolant (a first-generation P-OAT coolant) prior to 2005 and Mazda FL22 after 2005. Since Mazda explicitly recommends against coolants containing silicates, Mazda North America evidently chose the only silicate-free coolant in the Motorcraft stable, Dex-Cool, in preference to G-05. On the other hand, Ford equipped Mazda6 vehicles prior to the 2006 model year with Motorcraft Specialty Orange Coolant ( Dex-Cool). Prior to 2009, Ford used G-05 coolant in Ford vehicles equipped with engines jointly developed with Mazda. Unlike the Mazda3, Mazda MPV/5, Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Mazda RX-8, CX-7, and CX-9, the North American edition of the Mazda6 is built in Flat Rock MI by AutoAlliance International, a joint venture between Ford and Mazda that is operated by Ford. I was surprised to learn that prior to the 2006 model year, North American Mazda6 vehicles were not equipped with a P-OAT coolant developed by CCI, the dominant Japanese coolant company. But a genuine P-OAT coolant, particularly a second generation P-OAT coolant like Mazda FL22 or Motorcraft Specialty Green, is the best choice. Even German (BASF) coolant technology as embodied in G-05, which contains silicates and no phosphates, is a much better choice than conventional North American green for vehicles with aluminum blocks and aluminum radiators.
Using conventional North American green coolant in a Mazda is a bad idea. Ford evidently found the performance of Japanese P-OAT coolants was superior to G-05 in Mazda engineered engines. For the record, Ford started using Japanese P-OAT coolant technology in many of its 2009 models (those sharing engine technology with Mazda) instead of G-05. The only aftermarket P-OAT coolants are Japanese OEM coolants from Mazda, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, Zerex Asian Vehicle coolant, and Motorcraft Specialty Green Engine Coolant (which reportedly is identical to the second generation Mazda FL22 OEM P-OAT coolant). The other major Japanese auto manufacturers, namely Toyota, Honda, and Nissan all use essentially the same coolant technology.
In the 2005 model year, Mazda started using a second generation P-OAT coolant which has a lower concentration of phosphates and an improved organic acid additive package. P-OAT coolants rely on a combination of phosphates and organic acids to prevent corrosion they contain no silicates or borates. Prior to the 2005 model year, Mazdas were equipped with a first generation P-OAT (phosphated organic acid technology) coolant developed and manufactured by CCI, the leading Japanese coolant company. Mazda automotive coolants are green but they have almost NOTHING in common with conventional North American green coolant.
